What Is Durometer and Why Does It Matter?Durometer is the hardness of the rubber, measured on the Shore A scale. A 70 durometer O-Ring is the industry standard and works for most applications. Softer O-Rings (30 to 50 duro) need less force to seal and conform better to rough or uneven surfaces, which makes them a good fit for low pressure static seals and gaskets. Harder O-Rings (80 to 95 duro) resist extrusion under high pressure and hold up better in dynamic service where the seal is moving. As a rule of thumb: under 1,500 PSI, 70 duro is the safe default. Above 1,500 PSI, step up to 90 duro or add a backup ring. |
How O-Ring Shelf Life Works (SAE ARP5316)O-Ring shelf life is governed by SAE ARP5316 (now AS5316), the aerospace standard that replaced the old MIL-HDBK-695 and MIL-STD-1523A. Shelf life is tracked in calendar quarters from the cure date, marked like "2Q26" for the second quarter of 2026. The clock starts at the end of the cure quarter. The shelf life ratings are simple. Materials that oxidize over time get a limit. Materials that are chemically stable in air get an unlimited rating:
Those ratings assume proper storage: below 100°F (38°C), out of direct sunlight and UV light, away from ozone sources like electric motors, under 75% relative humidity (under 65% for urethanes), and stored without stretch or tension. An O-Ring hanging on a hook in a hot shop ages a lot faster than one sealed in a bag in a drawer. Every O-Ring we ship is batch traceable with a cure date under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system, so you always know exactly how old your seals are. |
Buna-N Nitrile O-Rings (NBR)What it is and where to use it: Buna-N, also called Nitrile or NBR, is the most widely used O-Ring material in the world. It is the default choice for petroleum oils, hydraulic fluids, fuels, LP gas, natural gas, propane, cold water, silicone greases, and ethylene glycol fluids. You will find it in air tools, hydraulic cylinders, pumps, engines, and just about every piece of equipment that touches oil. It seals well in both static and dynamic applications and gives you the best performance for the dollar of any elastomer. Avoid: Sunlight, UV, ozone, and outdoor weathering. Also avoid glycol brake fluids, ketones like acetone and MEK, strong acids, and chlorinated solvents. Temperature rating: -40°F to +250°F (-40°C to +121°C). Low temp compounds (B70-LT) extend cold service. Shelf life: 15 years per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Durometers and certifications we offer:

HNBR O-Rings - Highly Saturated Nitrile (HSN)What it is and where to use it: HNBR is Buna-N that has been hydrogenated, which gives it better heat resistance, better ozone and sunlight resistance, and stronger physical properties than standard nitrile. It fills the gap between NBR and Viton® when you need high tensile strength at higher temperatures. HNBR is the go-to for automotive air conditioning systems because it handles R134a refrigerant, and it holds up well against motor oil, ATF, sour gas, amine and oil mixtures, and oxidized fuels. Green HNBR is the standard color for A/C service so techs can identify it on sight. Avoid: Ketones, esters, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and strong oxidizing acids. Temperature rating: -40°F to +300°F (-40°C to +149°C). Shelf life: 15 years per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Durometers and certifications we offer:

EPDM O-Rings (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)What it is and where to use it: EPDM is the water and weather champion. It has outstanding resistance to hot and cold water, steam up to 400°F (204°C), glycol based brake fluids, phosphate-ester hydraulic fluids (HFD-R, Skydrol type), ozone, sunlight, and aging. It also handles many acids, alkalis, cleaning agents, and polar solvents like alcohols and ketones. Use it in plumbing, municipal water systems, household appliances, food and beverage processing, brake systems, and any outdoor application. One important note: never use petroleum grease on EPDM. Use only silicone based O-Ring lubricant. Avoid: Mineral oils, petroleum greases and fuels, gasoline, LPG, aromatic hydrocarbons, and solvents. Petroleum products will swell and destroy EPDM. Temperature rating: -65°F to +300°F (-54°C to +149°C). Shelf life: Unlimited per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Durometers and certifications we offer:

Viton® / FKM Fluorocarbon O-RingsWhat it is and where to use it: Viton® (the DuPont/Chemours brand name for FKM fluorocarbon rubber) is the workhorse for high heat and chemical service. It has exceptional resistance to petroleum oils, fuels, gasoline, diesel, LPG, natural gas, aromatic hydrocarbons like benzene and toluene, chlorinated solvents, silicone oils, mineral and vegetable oils, chlorine water, ozone, and weathering. It also has low compression set, low gas permeability, and excellent aging, which makes it a top pick for high vacuum work. You will find FKM in aircraft engines, automotive fuel systems, and chemical processing everywhere. Avoid: Ketones (MEK, acetone), hot water and steam, glycol brake fluid, alkalis, amines, ammonia gas, Skydrol 500, and low molecular weight organic acids like formic and acetic acid. Temperature rating: -20°F to +400°F (-29°C to +204°C). GFLT grades extend low temperature service. Shelf life: Unlimited per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Durometers and certifications we offer: Our stock compounds are designed to meet or exceed popular FKM compounds including Parker V747-75 and V700-75, 19357, V14-75, 9009-75, F13664, 514AD, and 9500-75.

Viton® Extreme ETP O-RingsWhat it is and where to use it: Viton® Extreme ETP is a premium peroxide cured fluoroelastomer with the broadest fluid resistance of any FKM. It handles the things that kill standard Viton®: strong bases, organic amines, high pH fluids, and polar fluids, on top of everything standard FKM already resists (aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, hydraulic fluids, fuels, and alcohols). For applications below 400°F (204°C), ETP is often a cost-effective alternative to FFKM perfluoroelastomers like Kalrez®, Chemraz®, Isolast®, and Parofluor®. It is also a wear resistant substitute for fluorosilicone in dynamic seals, and it handles high alcohol content fuels that standard FKM cannot. Temperature rating: -8°F to +482°F (-22°C to +250°C). Shelf life: Unlimited per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Durometers and certifications we offer:
|
Silicone O-Rings (VMQ)What it is and where to use it: Silicone is the extreme temperature specialist for static seals. It stays flexible in deep cold and holds up in high heat, with the widest usable range of the common elastomers. Silicone compounds are very clean and do not impart odor or taste, which makes them the standard for food, beverage, medical, and pharmaceutical applications. Nearly our entire silicone line is FDA compliant. Silicone also resists ozone, UV, dry heat, and weathering. One caution: silicone has low tear strength, so keep it in static applications and out of dynamic (moving) seals. Avoid: Petroleum oils and fuels, concentrated acids and alkalis, most solvents, and prolonged steam above 250°F (121°C). Not for dynamic sealing. Temperature rating: -75°F to +400°F (-59°C to +204°C) for standard compounds. Special phenyl silicones run down to -148°F (-100°C). Shelf life: Unlimited per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Durometers and certifications we offer:
|
Fluorosilicone O-Rings (FVMQ)What it is and where to use it: Fluorosilicone combines the wide temperature stability of silicone with the fuel, oil, and solvent resistance of a fluorocarbon. That combination is unmatched for aerospace fuel systems and automotive fuel emission controls, and FVMQ compounds are built to meet or exceed government, military, aerospace, automotive, and industrial specs. Like silicone, it has low tear strength and limited abrasion resistance, so keep it in static applications. Avoid: Brake fluids, hydrazine, ketones, and dynamic (moving) seal applications. Temperature rating: -76°F to +392°F (-60°C to +200°C). Shelf life: Unlimited per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Durometers and certifications we offer: Our fluorosilicone line is blue and carries full military and aerospace qualifications:
|
Neoprene O-Rings (CR, Chloroprene)What it is and where to use it: Neoprene is the preferred seal material for the refrigeration industry because of its resistance to ammonia and Freon® refrigerants (R12, R13, R21, R22, R113, R114, R115, R134A). It is reasonably priced with good resistance to moderate petroleum oils, ozone, sunlight, and oxygen aging, plus relatively low compression set, good resilience, and outstanding physical toughness. It also handles silicone oils, water, vegetable oils, alcohols, and low pressure oxygen. Avoid: Mineral oils (very low resistance), ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons, esters, and strong oxidizing acids. Temperature rating: -40°F to +225°F (-40°C to +107°C). Shelf life: 15 years per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Durometers and certifications we offer:

Aflas® O-Rings (FEPM, TFE/P)What it is and where to use it: Aflas® is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and propylene with excellent resistance across a wide range of aggressive media. It is famous in oil field service because it handles the combination that beats most other elastomers: sour oil and gas (H2S), amine corrosion inhibitors, steam, and high heat all at once. It is recommended for oils and lubricants, hydraulic and brake fluids, transmission and power steering fluids, ozone, acids, bases, and alcohols. It also has strong electrical resistance properties. Avoid: Cold service below -25°F, ketones, and aromatic hydrocarbons in some grades. Temperature rating: -25°F to +450°F (-32°C to +232°C), up to +500°F (+260°C) short term. Shelf life: Unlimited per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Durometers and certifications we offer:

FFKM Perfluoroelastomer O-Rings (Simriz®)What it is and where to use it: FFKM is the top of the elastomer food chain. Perfluoroelastomers contain even more fluorine than FKM, which gives them the resilience of a rubber seal with chemical resistance approaching solid PTFE. FFKM handles hydrocarbons, highly corrosive fluids, and even oxygen plasma environments for extended periods. It is the material for chemical processing, petroleum refining, semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, medical, pharmaceutical, and food processing where nothing else survives. We supply genuine Freudenberg Simriz® compounds because of their durability and the support Freudenberg stands behind them with. Simriz® is the equivalent class of material sold elsewhere as Kalrez®, Chemraz®, and Isolast®. Temperature rating: Varies by compound, up to +617°F (+325°C) continuous on high temperature grades. See each compound below. Shelf life: Unlimited per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Compounds we offer: Shop all Simriz® FFKM AS568 | Shop Metric FFKM

PTFE O-Rings (Polytetrafluoroethylene, AKA Teflon®)What it is and where to use it: PTFE is the most chemically inert O-Ring material we sell. This white, rigid polymer resists nearly every chemical: acids, bases, oils, solvents, fuels, and steam. It is also tough, abrasion resistant, and naturally slippery, which makes it excellent in valves, chemical processing equipment, and analytical instruments like mass spectrometer probes. The trade-off is that PTFE has no elasticity. It does not compress and recover like rubber, so proper groove design is critical to get a reliable seal. If you need PTFE chemistry with rubber-like recovery, look at our PTFE encapsulated O-Rings below. Avoid: Applications that need elastic recovery or repeated reassembly, and molten alkali metals. Temperature rating: -100°F to +500°F (-73°C to +260°C). Shelf life: Unlimited. PTFE is chemically stable and does not age in storage. Durometers and certifications we offer:
|
Teflon® PTFE Encapsulated O-Rings (FKM or Silicone Core)What it is and where to use it: These O-Rings solve PTFE's biggest weakness. A seamless FEP fluoropolymer jacket completely encloses an elastomer core of either silicone or Viton®. You get the chemical and temperature resistance of solid PTFE on the outside with the elasticity and recovery of rubber on the inside, which matters in both dynamic and static sealing. Choose the silicone core for the widest temperature range and the FKM core where you need a firmer, more resilient seal in the mid-temperature range. Temperature rating: FKM core: -10°F to +300°F (-23°C to +149°C). Silicone core: -80°F to +500°F (-62°C to +260°C). Shelf life: Unlimited per SAE ARP5316. Both the FEP jacket and the FKM or silicone cores carry unlimited ratings. Durometers and certifications we offer:

Urethane Cast Disogrin O-Rings (Polyurethane)What it is and where to use it: Cast Disogrin polyurethane is the strongest O-Ring material we sell. It is the top pick for wear applications where abrasives, high pressure, and movement are all present at once. Cast urethane O-Rings excel in quick disconnects, high pressure hydraulic and water systems, and nailer and riveting equipment. They are particularly recommended for hydraulic systems with high pressures, shock loads, wide metal tolerances, or abrasive contamination, the conditions that extrude and chew up standard rubber O-Rings. Avoid: Acids, ketones, and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Some urethanes are also sensitive to water and humidity, especially hot water. Temperature rating: -115°F to +250°F (-82°C to +121°C). Shelf life: 5 years per SAE ARP5316. With proper storage (sealed packaging, below 65% relative humidity), urethane O-Rings that pass a visual inspection are good for up to 10 years. Durometers and certifications we offer:
|
Urethane EU O-Rings (Millable Polyurethane)What it is and where to use it: EU millable gum urethane combines hardness with elasticity and delivers outstanding abrasion resistance and tear strength. It costs more than commodity rubbers, so it earns its keep in applications that demand its physical toughness: industrial seals, air guns, paintball markers, pneumatic tools, and other high wear dynamic applications where a Buna-N O-Ring would wear out fast. Avoid: Acids, ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons, hot water, and high heat. Temperature rating: -30°F to +180°F (-34°C to +82°C). Shelf life: 5 years per SAE ARP5316. With proper storage (sealed packaging, below 65% relative humidity), urethane O-Rings that pass a visual inspection are good for up to 10 years. Durometers and certifications we offer:
|
Butyl O-Rings (IIR, Isobutylene Isoprene)What it is and where to use it: Butyl rubber's claim to fame is gas impermeability. It lets less gas pass through it than any other common elastomer, which makes it the specialist for vacuum service and gas sealing. It also performs well with glycol based brake fluids, phosphate-ester hydraulic fluids, silicone fluids, and it resists ozone, weathering, and moisture. Butyl also has excellent shock dampening and electrical insulation properties. Avoid: Petroleum oils, fuels, and hydrocarbon solvents. Petroleum products swell butyl quickly. Temperature rating: -75°F to +250°F (-59°C to +121°C) typical for standard compounds. Confirm with the compound datasheet for your application. Shelf life: 15 years per SAE ARP5316 with proper storage. Durometers and certifications we offer: Shop all Butyl AS568
